The Beck Family…. there were two, three, four in a bed…
Tony and Linda Beck have taken over the lease of Deneholme in January 2009 – the 15 year lease will see them running this place until at least 2024. (Which sounds a bit scary…)
Tony is originally from Newcastle, a born and bred Geordie, who discovered his passion for outdoor education in his teens and has since worked for a huge number of outdoor activity providers, such as Mobex, Fairbridge, High Adventure, Norcorft Training to name but a few. His qualifications are multi disciplinary and cover watersports, climbing, mountain leadership and caving as well as biking and expedition leadership. He met Linda in 2003, when she came over from Germany on a business trip. Linda’s background is in International Business Administration, Human Resource Management and Marketing – however she has since gained a number of qualifications in the Outdoor Industry – she is a teacher of rock climbing (SPA), a mountain bike trail leader (MBTL), an archery instructor (GNAS) and currently training for her mine and cave leader award.
Linda moved to England in 2005, after completing her degree with the Open University and Berufsakademie in Stuttgart and Munich. After briefly working for the Calvert Trust at Kielder, Linda and Tony set up their own adventure company in 2006, then called “BECKs Development Training”, based in Wark, Northumberland.
The business grew and several moves to increasingly bigger premises saw them running their mobile adventure company from a farmhouse north of Morpeth up until 2008.
This is when they got married and took their business to the next level by turning it into “BECKs Training Limited” – negotiations started to take on the lease of Deneholme – completed in 2009.
Tony and Linda now have two children, Anja born at Deneholme on Christmas eve in 2009 – and Samuel, born in spring 20012 – Tony and Linda have since moved off site, after renovating Victoria House for nearly two years and now live on the market square in Allendale.
In 2013, Tony and Linda took on a second lease – this time not a property, but a truly beautiful spot of countryside: Sweethope Loughs near Kirkwhelpington. Sweethope Adventure Limited is run as a fishery as well as a prime site for adventurous activities – canoeing and raft building, rock climbing and abseiling, weaseling, bouldering, mountain biking, archery and orienteering are all facilitated from those scenic loughs right opposite the Great Wanneys in North Northumberland.
There are always plans for the future and currently Tony and Linda are dreaming … to turn their passion for mountains and skiing into reality and taking on a small group accommodation venue in the alps in Austria – possibly as early as 2016.
